Alternatives In Action Charity Profile

Alternatives in Action (AIA) creates innovative experiences for diverse populations of children, youth and adults that challenge them to become effective citizens who will have a powerful impact on the world.

Based at Alameda Point, AIA has three core programs: 1) HOME– an after-school and summer youth development program that offers 250 low income youth per year, ages 12-19, opportunities to address institutional gaps in their communities through creating dynamic community projects 2) BASE – a public charter high school for 110 youth that creates an environment in which young people take ownership over their school and learning, and change their lives as they change the community around them and 3) HOME Sweet HOME Preschool – a fully licensed preschool for over 20 families with children 2-5 years old that promotes personal transformation through intergenerational work.

Alternatives In Action Volunteer Information

The programs at Alternatives In Action are designed to meet the needs and interests of youth by providing them with opportunities to become effective citizens. (An effective citizen is one who can THINK, FEEL, who know what he/she BELIEVES and can take meaningful ACTION).
Youth at Alternatives in Action have many opportunities to develop in the area of
effective citizenship through creation and participation in real world projects (CityView Skate Park, HOME Sweet HOME preschool, AP Community Garden, Murals, etc) The programs at AIA place a strong emphasis on youth-adult collaboration. Youth are motivated by their opportunities for making a difference in their communities.

The impact on the community can be seen not only through projects and enterprises, but also through AIA’s relationships with other organizations in the city, county, bay area and nationally, and its inclusion in key city and regional planning processes. The programs at AIA place a strong emphasis on youth-adult collaboration. Youth change their attitudes about themselves and the adults around them. Adults begin to see that young people are not only worthy of their investment, but are also incredible resources for the community.
